Musang King D197: How to Identify, Understand Grades & Pick the Best Fruit

Part 2 of 2 · Musang King D197 · how to identify durian · durian grades

Fake or mislabelled Musang King is a real problem at tourist-facing stalls. Learning to identify the real thing — and pick the best specimen — is the single most important skill a durian buyer can have.

The Five-Star Secret: How to Identify Authentic Musang King

The most reliable physical identifier? The Five-Star base.

Look at the bottom of the fruit. Where the segments meet the base, an authentic Musang King shows a distinct five-pointed star pattern formed by clearly visible seams. This isn't subtle — it's pronounced and unmistakable once you know what to look for.

The Five-Star Base: Visible star-shaped seams where segments converge at the bottom. Your #1 authenticity marker.

  1. The Seams: Run along the full length of the fruit and are clearly defined. D24 has nearly invisible seams — a dead giveaway you're holding the wrong fruit.
  2. The Stem: Thick, short, and slightly cork-like. A very long thin stem often indicates a different variety.
  3. The Thorns: Large, pyramidal, and widely spaced. Musang King thorns are bold and angular — not fine and clustered.
  4. The Shape: Slightly oval or lopsided, never perfectly round. Perfectly round durians are almost always a different cultivar.
Feature Musang King (D197) D24 (Sultan)
Base pattern Clear 5-pointed star Faint or invisible
Seams Prominent, visible Nearly invisible
Flesh colour Deep turmeric gold Pale yellow-cream
Taste Bittersweet, complex Sweet-bitter, milder
Price (Malaysia) RM40–RM80/kg RM30–RM60/kg

Decoding the Grades: From Grade A to Grade C

Common misconception: Grade A tastes better than Grade C.

The truth: Grade has nothing to do with flavour. It refers entirely to shape and yield.

Grade Shape & Weight Price Range Taste Quality
Grade A Round/ovoid · 2.3–3kg+ RM80+/kg Excellent
Grade B Slightly irregular · 1.8–2.3kg RM60–RM80/kg Excellent
Grade C Crooked/asymmetrical · 1.2–1.8kg RM40–RM60/kg Excellent

The Connoisseur's Guide to Picking the Best Fruit

  1. The Shake Test: Hold the fruit near your ear and give it a gentle shake. Slight rattling inside means the flesh has separated from the shell — a sign of perfect ripeness.
  2. The Scent Test: Smell the seams directly (not the spines). A ripe Musang King releases a warm, fragrant aroma. No scent usually means harvested too early.
  3. The Seam Check: Run your finger along the seams. They should feel slightly yielding — firm but with a hint of give. Totally rigid means unripe; seams that burst open mean overripe.
  4. The Source Question: Ask where the fruit is from. Pahang (Bentong and Raub) is the gold standard. Choose vendors with direct farm relationships.

On Seasonal Availability
Peak Musang King season runs June through August. A smaller season occurs around October–January. Outside these windows, properly frozen pulp from reputable vendors is the only way to experience true Musang King quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does grade affect taste in Musang King?

No. Grade A, B, and C refer entirely to shape and yield — not flavour. A Grade C Musang King from a premium Pahang orchard will taste just as good as a Grade A from the same tree. You're paying for aesthetics, not quality of the pulp.

When is Musang King season in Malaysia?

Peak season runs June through August. A smaller secondary season occurs around October to January. Outside these windows, properly frozen pulp from farm-to-table vendors is the most reliable option for consistent quality.
