Malaysian Durian Varieties: The Ones You Actually Need to Know
Malaysia has over 200 registered durian varieties. You don't need to know all of them. You need to know about seven — the varieties that appear on menus, drive market prices, and dominate every serious durian conversation from Penang to Singapore.
Here's what each one tastes like, where it comes from, and when to seek it out.
Musang King (D197 / Mao Shan Wang)
The undisputed headline variety. Musang King is what put Malaysian durian on the international map — commanding prices over US$12,000 per tonne and driving a cultural obsession that stretches from Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai.
Taste: Rich, bittersweet, deeply creamy. The flesh is thick and golden-yellow with a two-act flavour — initial sweetness followed by a long, complex, dark-chocolate-like bittersweet finish. No other variety produces this specific progression.
Origin: Gua Musang, Kelantan — now cultivated across Pahang, Perak, Selangor, and Johor. Peak season: June–August.
D24 (Sultan)
Malaysia's original royal durian — registered in 1934, reserved for sultans before becoming widely available. D24 was the undisputed king before Musang King arrived and is still the variety most durian educators recommend for first-timers.
Taste: Milder than Musang King. Balanced bittersweet with a smooth, consistent creaminess from first bite to last. More forgiving, more approachable, more suitable for eating in volume.
Origin: Bukit Merah, Perak. Now grown widely across Malaysia. Available earlier in the season than Musang King — often appearing in May when the main season begins.

Black Thorn (Duri Hitam / Ochee / D200)
The rarest and arguably most sought-after variety among serious collectors. Black Thorn has a completely different flavour profile from Musang King — sweeter, more wine-like, with a lush intoxicating quality that some durian connoisseurs rate above everything else.
Taste: Vivid orange-yellow flesh. Sweet, almost fermented warmth — tropical rum meets caramel. Far less bitterness than Musang King, far more immediate sweetness.
Origin: Balik Pulau, Penang — the geographical heartland of the best specimens. Limited supply makes it consistently the highest-priced Malaysian durian variety during peak season.
Rajah Kunyit (Turmeric King)
Named for its exceptional flesh colour — a vivid turmeric yellow that makes it visually unmistakable. Rajah Kunyit has some of the highest recorded Brix levels of any Malaysian variety, making it among the sweetest premium durians available.
Taste: Intensely sweet and fragrant with thick, dense flesh and an almost floral quality to the aroma. Less complexity than Musang King, more sheer sweetness than almost anything else.
Availability: Limited production makes Rajah Kunyit difficult to find at most outlets. When it appears during peak season at a guided tasting experience near KL, it sells out quickly.

D197, D88, D100 — The Collector's Grades
Beyond the well-known variety names, Malaysia's Department of Agriculture has registered hundreds of varieties by code. Among the collector-relevant ones:
- D88 — A premium variety with nutty, dry flesh and a distinctive flavour profile gaining recognition among enthusiasts as an alternative to Musang King.
- D100 — Known for its thin husk and high flesh-to-seed ratio — one of the most efficient durians by yield, making it valuable to both growers and buyers.
- D197 — The official registration code for Musang King. Worth knowing because unscrupulous vendors sometimes sell inferior varieties as 'D197' rather than Musang King, hoping buyers don't know the difference.
| Variety | Taste Profile | Best For | Rarity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Musang King (D197) | Complex bittersweet, layered, rich | Enthusiasts, gifts, special occasions | Widely available (season) |
| D24 (Sultan) | Milder bittersweet, smooth, creamy | First-timers, everyday eating | Widely available |
| Black Thorn (D200) | Sweet, wine-like, intoxicating | Sweet lovers, collectors | Rare — limited production |
| Rajah Kunyit | Intensely sweet, floral, high Brix | Sweetness seekers | Very rare |
| D88 | Nutty, drier flesh, distinctive | Enthusiast collectors | Rare |
| D100 | High yield, clean profile | Value-focused buyers | Moderate availability |

Frequently Asked Questions
How many durian varieties are there in Malaysia?
Over 200 varieties are registered with Malaysia's Department of Agriculture. In practice, around 10–15 varieties dominate the premium market. The most important for visitors and enthusiasts to know are Musang King, D24, Black Thorn, and Rajah Kunyit.
What is the difference between D197 and Musang King?
They are the same variety. D197 is the official Department of Agriculture registration code; Musang King is the popular name. Be cautious of vendors selling 'D197' without using the Musang King name — it can be used to misrepresent inferior varieties.
Which Malaysian durian is sweetest?
Rajah Kunyit consistently records the highest Brix levels of mainstream Malaysian premium varieties — making it the sweetest. Black Thorn is also significantly sweeter than Musang King, with a wine-like sweetness rather than the bittersweet complexity of Mao Shan Wang.
