Best Durian Day Trip from KL: A Complete 2026 Itinerary

Best Durian Day Trip from KL: A Complete 2026 Itinerary

A suggested day by DurianBB · For travellers staying in Kuala Lumpur

A durian morning, a taste of KL, and time to enjoy both

A durian day trip from KL can leave room for much more than durian. Start with a Hainanese breakfast at Yut Kee, spend the morning at DurianBB Academy in Seri Kembangan, then return for Nyonya lunch, Chinatown murals and dinner on Jalan Alor. The afternoon is yours to explore at your own pace.

This is a self-planned itinerary, not an all-inclusive tour. Book the Academy separately and arrange your own meals and transport. The suggested times below include space for the journey back into KL; shorten the afternoon if your visit runs longer.

Your day at a glance

When Where and what
7:30–8:15am Yut Kee, Jalan Kamunting: kaya toast, eggs and kopi. On Mondays, choose Oriental Kopi at Mid Valley instead.
Before 10am Travel to DurianBB Academy in Seri Kembangan; work backwards from your booked arrival.

Book now

10am–12pm DurianBB Academy: the morning booking slot, with activities and tasting according to your ticket.
12–2pm Return to KL, then Precious Old China, Central Market for a Nyonya lunch. Aim to eat around 1–2pm.
2–4pm Central Market → Kwai Chai Hong: crafts and art, followed by Chinatown murals.
4–6pm Hotel rest; optional DurianBB World dessert if you want more durian.
From 6:30pm Wong Ah Wah, Jalan Alor: chicken wings and a shared dinner. For Monday or an indoor meal, choose Madam Kwan’s, Pavilion KL.

This sample day starts in central KL and is easiest with a taxi or ride-hailing car for the Academy leg. Only the Academy session is a booked time. Allow more travel time for public transport and shorten the afternoon if your visit runs longer.

7:30am: a Hainanese breakfast at Yut Kee

Our first pick: Yut Kee, 1 Jalan Kamunting. Start with kaya-and-butter toast, soft-boiled eggs and kopi. Kaya is a sweet coconut-and-egg spread; this gives first-time visitors a clear introduction to a Malaysian coffee-shop breakfast without committing to a heavy meal before the Academy tasting.

  • Why this stop: Yut Kee’s Hainanese roots go back to 1928. Choose it for an old-established kopitiam experience, especially if you are staying around Dang Wangi or Chow Kit.
  • When: usual opening is 7:30am, Tuesday–Sunday; normally closed Monday. Arrive for opening and aim to finish around 8:15am, with departure adjusted to your driving route.
  • Know before choosing: this is a non-halal restaurant. If a queue threatens your Academy arrival, protect the booking rather than waiting for a particular breakfast.

Monday alternative: Oriental Kopi, Mid Valley Megamall, LG-043. Its official branch listing opens at 7am. Choose double butter kaya toast and Oriental Kopi; add a signature egg tart to share if you want a pastry. We chose this branch for its early start and its convenience for visitors staying around Mid Valley. It is a modern chain option rather than a heritage shop, and other branches open later.

Before 10am: get to DurianBB Academy

The Academy is in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, outside central Kuala Lumpur. Check a live route from your hotel before choosing your departure time. A taxi or ride-hailing journey and an MRT journey have different waiting and transfer needs.

If travelling via UPM station on the MRT Putrajaya Line, confirm the onward transfer, meeting point and return arrangements with the Academy before setting off. The station is not the Academy entrance. Leave breathing room for check-in and avoid making a lunch reservation that depends on an exact return time.

10am–12pm: discover durian beyond the tasting plate

Make the morning your chance to understand the fruit before exploring the rest of KL. The Academy brings together a discovery garden, learning activities and a durian master class. Follow the team’s programme on the day instead of planning individual activities to the minute.

Choose your ticket for the experience you want: the Adult Prime Box lists one durian type, while the Adult Platter lists four. Children’s, senior and family tickets have different inclusions. Check the current options and ask about particular varieties if they matter to your visit.

The booking calendar offers morning 10am–12pm and afternoon 3pm–5pm sessions. This route uses the morning slot. Allow additional time for arrival, any activities beyond the slot and your onward journey.

After the return journey: Nyonya lunch at Precious Old China

Go to Precious Old China on the mezzanine floor of Central Market, Jalan Hang Kasturi. Aim for lunch around 1–2pm after returning from the Academy. The restaurant lists an 11am opening, so lunch fits its published hours without waiting for an evening service.

  • What to order: start with Lemak Nenas Prawn and rice if you enjoy seafood: prawns and pineapple in a coconut-based curry. For dessert, choose Sago Gula Melaka, with coconut cream and palm sugar.
  • Why we chose it: Nyonya cooking introduces a different side of Malaysian food from the morning’s durian experience. You also finish lunch inside your first sightseeing stop, avoiding another restaurant-to-attraction journey.
  • Who it suits: visitors who want a sit-down local lunch and enjoy coconut-rich, aromatic dishes. The suggested prawn dish will not suit a shellfish allergy; use the menu to choose around dietary needs.

Give lunch its own time. If you leave the Academy later, have the meal first and reduce the Chinatown walk; the afternoon stops are flexible.

2–4pm: crafts at Central Market, murals at Kwai Chai Hong

First, spend around 30–45 minutes exploring Central Market. Browse Malaysian crafts, art and souvenirs. We chose it because you are already here for lunch, and it gives the day an indoor browsing stop before the outdoor lanes.

Then head to Kwai Chai Hong, off Lorong Panggung. Allow another 20–30 minutes at the lane for the murals and restored Chinatown setting, plus walking time between the two stops. Choose this for a short photo-and-heritage stop, not a large attraction that needs the rest of your afternoon. Its entrance is behind the Jalan Panggung shophouses; use the venue pin rather than searching along the whole of Petaling Street.

These are suggested visit allowances, not a timed tour. In rain, or if your group is tired, keep Central Market and skip the outdoor lane. You still have a complete day without ticking off every stop.

4–6pm: choose a break, not another compulsory stop

Head back to your hotel for a rest, stay in Chinatown, or continue towards Bukit Bintang for the evening. Keeping this part open makes the day easier to adapt to heat, rain and how much walking you feel like doing.

Still in the mood for durian? An optional stop at DurianBB World can add a dessert to your Chinatown visit. Check the current menu and opening details first. For a slower afternoon, skip dessert and take a hotel break before dinner.

6:30pm: chicken wings at Wong Ah Wah, Jalan Alor

For the street-food evening, choose Wong Ah Wah at 1–9 Jalan Alor. Start with its barbecued chicken wings to share, then add a rice or noodle dish from the menu for a full dinner. Make the wings the centre of your order: a shared grill dish gives dinner a different character from the coconut-rich lunch.

Why it fits: after a sit-down Nyonya lunch, a lively street-side meal gives the evening a different feel. It also puts you in Bukit Bintang for the end of the day. Choose it if your group enjoys an open-air food-street setting; it is less suitable if you want a quiet meal out of the heat or rain. Published dining listings show evening service and Monday closure.

For Monday or an indoor dinner: Madam Kwan’s, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Go to Level 1, Lot 1-16-00, 168 Jalan Bukit Bintang. Order nasi bojari if you want one substantial plate: tri-coloured rice with fried chicken, assam prawn and beef rendang. Choose this alternative for an indoor mall restaurant and a straightforward individual meal, especially if your group has had enough heat and walking.

The official Pavilion KL listing gives 10am–10pm opening. Directions to Madam Kwan’s Pavilion KL → · See the dishes

Pick one dinner venue. There is no need to eat at both or add another shopping stop before returning to your hotel.

What to book and budget for

  • Academy: choose your date, session and ticket on the Academy page; its separate booking flow charges in Malaysian ringgit.
  • Transport: plan the hotel-to-Academy journey, return to KL and evening trip back to your hotel.
  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks are separate from this itinerary’s Academy booking.
  • Optional extras: desserts and souvenirs are choices, not requirements for completing the day.

Questions about planning your durian day trip

Can I follow this Academy itinerary on a Monday?

The Academy normally closes on Mondays, except Malaysian public holidays that fall on Monday. If the booking calendar offers your holiday date, use Oriental Kopi at Mid Valley for breakfast, Precious Old China at Central Market for lunch and Madam Kwan’s at Pavilion KL for dinner. Yut Kee and Wong Ah Wah normally close on Mondays.

Can I fit the Academy and Kuala Lumpur sightseeing into one day?

Yes, this suggested route pairs the morning Academy slot with lunch and a limited afternoon around Central Market and Chinatown. Allow for travel and extra time at the Academy. Drop a city stop if the morning takes longer.

Does the Academy ticket cover breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Plan all three meals separately. Tickets list their own activities and tasting inclusions; a durian tasting is not a promise of a full lunch. Compare your selected ticket before booking.

Can I use public transport for this durian day trip from KL?

You can plan around UPM MRT station, but must arrange the remaining journey to and from the Academy. Confirm any station transfer before travelling and check each city connection for your date.

What if only an afternoon Academy session is available?

Have breakfast and a shorter city visit first, eat lunch, then travel for the 3pm–5pm session. Plan dinner after your return. Do not add the full morning itinerary’s afternoon sightseeing on top.

Is the itinerary suitable for children or visitors who do not want to taste durian?

Check Academy ticket suitability and inclusions with the team first. Keep meals familiar where helpful and reduce the afternoon walking. Everyone can skip the optional durian dessert stop.
